Faux-Wood Mirror Frames
As a result of requests to improve the stability of imitation wood products, IFS Chemicals developed a foam system that is suitable for replacing natural wood in many applications. Top quality gilt mirrors and picture frames are now being manufactured by Yearn Glass in London. The frames are produced from a two-part polyurethane resin that is injected into a variety of moulds, resulting in a frame that remains dimensionally stable for very many years, even in high humidity atmospheres. Unlike wood, which tends to warp and split, polyurethane foam remains stable under all environmental conditions. The specific formulation for Yearn Glass has also been modified to allow exceptionally good adhesion between the polyurethane moulding and the gold or silver paint.
More recent developments have extended the use of this type of product, including the manufacture of wood fascias and decking materials. The latter products can be used in conjunction with a non-slip elastomeric coating.
