Polyurethane is one of the most versatile products in the polymer industry, capable of being moulded into an almost endless array of useful items for a wide selection of industries. Moulded grades of polyurethane cover a range of densities from 60 to 1200 kg/m3 and hardness values from 25 Shore A to 80 Shore D. They can be found in many diverse businesses including the automotive, leisure, rail, aerospace and furniture industries.
It is virtually impossible to list every application of PU foams and elastomers. Wherever strong, lightweight, high-performance mouldings are required, you’ll find polyurethane products. They can be processed in relatively inexpensive moulds, can be combined with metal inserts for extra rigidity, and finished in a variety of paint options, including UV-stable versions. Much of the success of polyurethane materials comes from the ease with which they controllably expand to fill complex cavities. The choice of dispensing machine for this type of application is particularly important, as is tool design. Attention needs to be given to filling points, mould angle and venting positions. Above all, moulds must be maintained at a warm temperature, typically about 40-50oC. IFS Chemicals has a full range of moulding products, as well as the technical staff to assist in all aspects of the moulding operation. This includes chemical storage and transfer to dispensing equipment, mould design, production processes and post-finishing techniques.
